Donald's book, Then I Am Strong Coming of Age in Myrtle, is one of the best written books (sentence structure and descriptions) I have read lately. He describes each incident so well that you feel you were actually there participating in the event. Even though I am from Myrtle, I am sure I would have enjoyed the book had I not been from Myrtle. It has been 50 plus years since I walked the halls of Myrtle School, but I relived those days as I read his book. It is hard to imagine that our very intelligent Donald Dorman got into some of the mischievous things he so vividly told about in his book. I would think that most of Myrtle citizens never dreamed that Donald was concerned about his life as he lived it out in the book. This would be an excellent book for teenagers to read today. If I had a teenager in my family, I would definitely buy a copy for them. The spiritual influence revealed in the book needs to be read by not only teenagers, but by anyone having difficulties in their lives. After reading Donald's book, I have even more respect for him and his family as some of Myrtle's finest families. Donald, I am waiting on book number 2.
I have often asked myself how I survived as a boy growing up in rural and small town Southern America. In “Then I Am Strong,†Donald Dorman seems to turn that question around and asks, “How did small town Southern America survive boys growing up?â€
“When I Am Strong†is the account of a boy growing up in a small town in North Mississippi. Anyone who grew up in a small town will find himself reflecting on good memories, and possibly a few bad memories. Anyone who did not grow up in a small town will find some enjoyable insight into what shaped those of us who did grow up there.
Donald Dorman is honest and vulnerable in what he writes. The reader sees a young man who wins top academic honors who also fears being a failure. More importantly, the reader sees how a young man torn between success and failure learns the meaning of real success.
I highly recommend “Then I Am Strong.†It is one of the better books I have read recently.

He takes the reader there,from the perspective of an amusingly mischievous young boy,an acutely sensitive and troubled adolescent,and a high-achieving young man. He looks back as a mature man,capable of understanding how events of his growing years were lessons learned. He reveals his long-held secret,the lengths he went to in his attempts to hide it,and how his Christian faith was all that stood between him and the ultimate human tragedy. It's sure to stir emotions,and apt to cause some to look at their own lives differently.
I was a girl who grew up in small town America. This seemed like a perfect read for me. As I opened the book to the words "WHAT'S YOUR HURRY?", I had to smile because those were three words I had heard both my grandmothers say to me time and time again although I had never really thought about the impact of these words until I saw them in print. What a great way to engage the reader! This is a beautifully written story of a young boy's life journey. From the joys of being a small child in a small town to the pains and struggles of the adolescent years and the constant desire to "hurry" into the adult world to find that perfect place in life, Don Dorman's story is one of redemption that the reader will find both hopeful and inspirational. He sprinkles in many colorful characters from Myrtle that, unbeknownst to him at the time, were to become part of the circle that would eventually draw him back into the fold. While this is technically Don Dorman's story, it, in reality, is a story to be embraced by all...no matter where you grew up.
Great stories, interesting facts, often humorous. An "easy read" book through the eyes of the author. I was able to live the life of the writer and experience life as he saw it growing up in Mississippi. Although the tales were simple enough to grasp and understand, they pointed to a later time in the author's life where they proved to be life lessons well-learned. The book's end became more valuable as I realized that all the prior stories were the backdrop & foundation for the writer's present wisdom, insight to life & strong Christian values. Highly recommended reading.
First off, Donald is a great story teller. He crafted his stories well, and though I've never met him face to face, I could hear the voice of the author loud and clear. Donald and I did not grow up in Myrtle during the same era, but, I found myself whisked into the locales that he mentions, essentially smelling the air and feeling the humidity as if I was actually there. We even shared a couple of teachers and principals, albeit on opposite ends of their careers!
But there's more here than just for fellow Myrtle citizens and alumni. Donald's story is woven with a fabric of redemption. The trials of youth, the failures, the successes, and the mischief are all included here with the undercurrent of a deep faith in Christ that helped bring him to maturity. Anyone who enjoys a coming of age story will find good reading within these pages.
