Sequel to the thrilling zombie novel Plague Town

Ashley Parker was an ordinary woman who was also a "wild card", immune to the emerging zombie plague, drawn unwillingly into a shadowy paramilitary organization. Having been ambushed in San Francisco, which is now fully engulfed in the zombie plague, Ashley and the wild cards must pursue the enemy to San Diego. There they will discover a dark organization that seeks to weaponize the plague. But that isn't the worst news. The plague itself has gone airborne, making it transferable without physical contact. It cannot be controlled by anyone, so reports of the zombie swarm are coming in from across the United States - and across the world.

Plague Nation Ashley Parker Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Dana Fredsti LLC Secular Media Group Books

This is the second book in the Ashley Parker trilogy. I actually wish that it was longer than a trilogy.

Again, it's a well told zombie story with well-defined characters.

One thing I left out of my review of the book review is the author's mastery of pop culture. I found it superior to a book like "Ready Player One" because it wasn't tied so tightly to gaming (I'm not a gamer).

I'm onto the third and last book in the Ashley Parker series, Plague World.

Plague Nation Ashley Parker Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Dana Fredsti LLC Secular Media Group Books Reviews

Ashley Parker is a wild card, immune to the zombie plague and forced to join a paramilitary organization to combat the zombies. After an ambush, San Francisco has been completely overtaken by zombies, so her and her fellow wild cards travel to San Diego to find a cure and end the zombie plague. A wrench gets thrown in their plans when a mysterious organization tries to weaponize the zombie virus and then it becomes airborne. No one can control how it spreads any longer and physical contact isn't needed. Ashley and her team are the only people who can really help save the world. Let's hope they can survive long enough to fight against the coming zombie hordes.

Ashley Parker is once again a wonderful heroine. She's strong, but still sympathetic and emotional, and she's grown a lot since the last book. Although still fun, the whole novel takes on a darker tone. There are less references (OMG that Great Race reference!) and jokes than the previous books and some truly sobering and tearjerking events happen. I like that the tone isn't completely lighthearted because it would feel jarring to go from something depressing to silly jokes right after. Ashley has to deal with very harsh truths. Even though she's superhuman, she can't save everyone. Sometimes people are going to die on her watch and she will be powerless to stop it. A lot of the things she goes through is reminiscent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which I love! She has to deal with all this supernatural stuff and still maintain fairly normal platonic and romantic relationships within that crazy world.

Plague Nation doesn't suffer from second book syndrome. It's just as captivating and action-packed as the first book. The plot twists and turns so I don't know what to expect next. Intermixed with Ashley's story, little vignettes describe how the zombie plague is advancing in different parts of the US and how a Typhoid Mario spreads the disease through sleeping with people. The new creepy organization that wants the zombie plague to spread is very human and terrifying. It makes me wonder how a person could want that for the world, especially when it puts them at great risk as well.

Plague Nation is almost as good as Plague Town. The only negative thing is that the book meanders until the halfway and then picks up momentum. Dana Fredsti takes some risks and reminds us that not every character is safe. I really want to read Plague World now, but it's not out until April 8th, 2014! Ugh, why must I wait so long? Highly recommended!
Middle book syndrome shows up since the characters and action are more interesting in the context of the the first book, but Plague Nation manages to be a satisfying read nonetheless. It left me more than ready to read the final book, but not feeling cheated. Plague Nation expands not just the outbreaks of the zombie virus, but the playing field for heroine Ashley and the zombie fighting secret society she'd been recruited into after surviving a zombie outbreak in her little college town. It becomes clear the outbreak(s) aren't random or accidental and her group has likely been betrayed from within after sabotage blows up the lab where they were working on a potential cure and one scientist is nearly killed and another nearly kidnapped by mysterious forces.
I enjoyed this book on so many levels . . . It was so easy to visualize what's going on, following the desperate journey of the wild cards to the next potential safe spot, knowing that it's all building to an epic climax in Plague World . . . I loved the gallows humour, so necessary in the world that Dana Fredsti has created, and indeed, in our world, too. Watching her protagonist, Ashley, learn to cope with the reality of her situation, and the clock ticking down on it, was absolutely riveting. And then the sinister back-story revealing itself -- the machinations of the zombie outbreak -- it's maddening not having the answers laid out in front of me, guaranteeing that I will be getting a copy of Plague World at the earliest opportunity.

Fredsti's love for the zombie genre in film and text is definitely clear in this book, as well as her love for San Francisco. I loved the details of her heroes' physical journey, and as much as my heart ached for Ashley and the punishment she was going through (it's really remarkable how many obstacles Dana can come up with, short of an earthquake sinking the whole place into the Bay), she struck the right balance with references to key moments and quotes in many of the films and books I love. I found myself snorting aloud, even when reading in public places. It's both funny and poignant.

If you are a fan of the zombie genre -- if you love reading about shambling, rotting, moaning, undead flesh-craving killers -- this book is 100% for you.
This second novel in the Ashley Parker series is fast paced and believable, with unique characters you can identify with, especially the ones that quote movies I love. The heroine is a bit more narcissistic than I'd prefer, but this just gives her the chance to go on her own journey of self discovery. Weapons and tactics are accurate, which is a pleasant contrast to the usual zombie fair. The zombie situations are also at times unique, not just the typical slogging gore fest. The concept of wild cards who are mortal but relatively immune to zombie bites is a great twist. Recommend this series to fans of zombies, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost Girl, Army of Darkness (props to the author for her movie roles) and yes, even the Walking Dead.
