Focusing primarily on two families, the Stricklands and the McBrides, the storyline follows the main characters as they build their lives and financial empires, facing the challenges of disease, stock market crashes, and the influences of the Mexican drug trade.
Aside from the spellbinding plot of this very likable and entertaining novel is the sense of humanity that is woven through these stories of generations of families from diverse races, ethnicities and backgrounds who are connected by respect, friendship and love of each other. If there is a take-away message of On the Backs of Our Children, it is that we are stronger and better people when we move beyond our differences and concentrate on the things that bring us together.

"On The Backs Of Our Children" is a wonderful combination of history, suspense and action. Ted Purcell is a great storyteller. I can hardly wait for the sequel.
There are intricate plots, diverse dramas, knowledgeable understanding of the military weapons, government procedures and the geography of that part of the world. The humor that the author put into the book is hilarious.
I could not put that book down. Can not wait for the next book to come out.
As a career educator this book is a must read. You will become part of the family of the characters in this book. This book needs to be part of the curriculum of every school district. It is very entertaining and can be a great teaching tool for the history of our Mexican/American border culture. It is a good read for all ages.
I was absorbed in the narrative of this book, "On the Backs of Our Children". It's a novel that takes place along the Rio Grande River, border between Texas and Mexico (the Big Bend area). It has a lot of historical facts of the life and cultures of people who lived along the border area from 1864 to the present. If you enjoy reading love stories, history, and adventure this will be a great book to dig into.
Enjoyed the book in spite of multiple editing oversights.
Would recommend to anyone who enjoys a keep you on the edge of the seat thriller.
This was an interesting story with very believable details, characters and events. I'm sure I'll read it again and hope that someday a movie is made.
I have read this book twice and found more to enjoy the second time!! It is based on factual history and gives an insight into current life on the Texas border today. Very enjoyable read!!
